Our Foolish House

An experimental installation inspired by Tree, Jane Hirshield:

It is foolish

to let a young redwood

grow next to a house.

Even in this

one lifetime,

you will have to choose.

That great calm being,

this clutter of soup pots and books—

Already the first branch-tips brush at the window.

Softly, calmly, immensity taps at your life.

My interpretation is that people hide in their shelter of comforts to forget the ephemeral nature of mankind and their short existence. The choice is whether to obsess over small, trivial things or to acknowledge a greater cosmos. The installation is to contrast the elements of man and nature by contrasting scale using the inside and outside of the house and allowing the viewer to immerse themselves within a perspective.
